Cockatiel Care Secrets

About Cockatiels

Cockatiels are among the most sought and popular birds for a pet. More and more enthusiasts have thought about cockatiels with their amazing behavior and exciting physical features. They are usually known as small parrots with diverse color patterns and a distinctive crest above their heads. These birds are very attractive, affable and can be easily tamed. With their smaller size, cockatiel care and taming becomes easier to carry out than with other parrot species.

It is great to think about cockatiels for a household pet since they are entertaining, having a nice capability to mimic speech although they can be hard to recognize. Quite the opposite, they are relatively fine at whistling and can be taught to whistle different melodies.

When choosing cockatiels, it is best to select a hand fed young cockatiel that has been handled well. The prices can vary with color so expect to pay a little bit more with from a decent breeder. But naturally, any expense will be worth it with a well fed and handled cockatiel.

Among the other things to consider about cockatiels is their health condition. When picking one to be brought home as a pet, opt for a cockatiel that is bright, alert and active. A bird that sits silently with puffed feathers might be feeling sick and must be avoided. Instead, the feather should be soft and shiny and lays flat on the body. Their feathers around the vent must be parched, clean and free from fecal substance. Their nostrils must be smooth and clean, their feet scales must also be smooth, nails in great condition and a beak that is well-shaped.

Owners who are very fond about cockatiels should also consider an appropriate cage for their pet. Because cockatiels are very playful and active, they should be provided with a bigger cage. Minimum size varies but a reliable measurement goes from a minimum 26 inches tall and 20 by 20 inches wide cage as a bare minimum. The cage barís spacing must be not more than æ of an inch. These are some of the considerations about cockatiels. Aside from that, the horizontal cage bars generally provide the best opportunity for cockatiels to exercise and climb. A few spaces must be allocated for a couple of perches at various levels.

Knowing more about cockatiels will also make owners provide proper food for a healthy cockatiel diet and nutrition. Seeds are healthful part of a cockatiel diet but are high in fat, thus, they must be given in moderation only. Some experts recommend only 30% of the birdís diet. There are pelleted diets which are usually good choice for birds since they are nutritionally balanced and birds do not pick out a favorite seed and leave the rest.
