When having the cockatiel as a pet, it is important to consider cockatiel diet. It is one of the most important aspects of keeping this bird as a pet. Just like any other pet, they are meant to be cared for. As a pet owner, you know that you must consider the health of your cockatiel as your top priority. A pet’s health greatly depends upon its diet. Yes, birds can eat whatever they find when they are in the wild. Because of this, you must include a variety of foods in their diet which are as close to their accepted diet as possible.

On the contrary, a cockatiel diet can include most of the foods that human beings eat. They mainly feed on berries, seeds, nuts, flowers and fruits. Sometimes, cockatiels can survive on basic diet of pellets and seeds alone. They do not need any particular food but they require certain nutrients. It is essential to add in more fruits and vegetables to your cockatiel diet as they are also great sources of nutrition.

The growth of your cockatiel pet can depend on its diet and nutrition. More than the reproduction, growth, longevity and temperament also depend on the diet. Thus, a good and balanced diet becomes very important in order to mould a healthy, lovable and life-long feathered buddy.

To make it short, a balanced cockatiel diet must have the same share of vegetables, seeds and pellets along with a small amount of nuts, fruits, proteins, bean mixture, cooked rice as well as food including corn, cheese, pasta, cereal, meat and so many other foods. Their diet must contain them all and for that they can eat most if the things that humans eat.

Your pet cockatiel’s food is usually comprised by pellets as much as 60%. As a matter of fact, some cockatiels live on pellet diet. You must keep the pellets in their food dish, every time you need to feed them. These pellets are important as they provide your pet with a balanced cockatiel diet.

Aside from the pellets, most cockatiels also feed on seeds such as the bulk canary seeds, mixed sunflower seeds, oats, hemp millets and panicum millets. When you provide your pet bird with only the seed diet on a regular basis, it might lead to a deficiency in vitamins and minerals. Thus, a vitamins supplement can be necessary in that case.

A healthy mixed cockatiel diet contains it all ñ 25% pellets, 25% vitamin enriched seeds, 25% vegetables and dark leafy greens and fruits, 15% cooked corn, rice and bean mixture and 10% cereal, table food, pasta, meat, cheese, bread and a lot more food. Water is just as important so make sure they drink regularly.
