Cockatiels As Pets
The cockatiel is one of the most popular pet birds. More and more pet owners have considered cockatiels as pets with their brilliant behavior and vibrant physical attributes. They are commonly known as small parrots with varied color patterns and a crest above their heads. These birds are very beautiful, sociable and are easier to tame. Due to their smaller size, cockatiel care and taming is easier to do than with other parrot species.
A lot of pet owners love to keep the cockatiels as pets as they are entertaining with their capability to mimic speech though they can be hard to understand. On the contrary, they are relatively good at whistling and can even be trained to whistle some tunes.
When opting for cockatiels as pets, it is best to pick a hand fed young bird which has been handled on a regular basis. Prices can vary with color. Expect to pay a bit more from a reputable breeder, but of course any expense is worth it with a well handled cockatiel.
Cockatiels as pets are widely available among pet stores. When choosing one to be brought home, opt for a bird that is alert, bright and active. A bird that sits quietly with puffed feathers could be feeling ill and is best avoided. They feathers must be soft and shiny and lay down flat on the body. Their feathers around the cloaca or vent must be dry, clean and free from any fecal matter. Their feet scales must also be smooth, with nails in great condition, a beak that is well-shaped and smooth and clean nostrils.
Among the more essential things to consider when keeping cockatiels as pets is an appropriate cage. Since they are playful and active, they should be provided with a bigger cage. Minimum size varies but a reliable rule of thumb goes at least 26 inches tall and 20 by 20 inches wide as a bare minimum. The cage bar’s spacing must be not more three quarters of an inch. Horizontal cage bars usually provide the best opportunity for cockatiels to exercise and climb. A few spaces must be allocated for a couple of perches at various levels.
Having the cockatiels as pets at home also involves providing proper food for a healthy diet and nutrition. Seeds are healthful part of a cockatiel diet but are high in fat, thus, they must be given in moderation only. Some experts recommend only 30% of the bird’s diet. There are pelleted diets which are usually good choice for birds since they are nutritionally balanced and birds do not pick out a favorite seed and leave the rest.
